completely resolved. Medical treatment was continued for a total of 18 months. Three years later the patient is in good health. It has been retrospectively shown that this infection was due to hospital water contamination of the needle used during percutaneous nucleotomy. Seven cases of osteoarticular infections due to M. xenopi have been reported in the literature [1-7], including two cases ofvertebral osteomyelitis (one in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus [5] and one in an immunocompetent patient [6]). M. xenopi has been isolated frequently from samples from hot water generators and hospital storage tanks and, as in our case, has caused some cases of nosocomial infection [8]. In our case, spinal tuberculosis was diagnosed on the basis of the patient's clinical presentation and radiological histologic findings. However, histologic findings are not specific for M. tuber-

Peculiar evolution of streptococcal skin infections
Background Acute Streptococcus pyogenes infections may present under various forms, such as pharyngitis, scarlet fever, pneumonia, meningitis, cellulitis or impetigo. Toxigenic infections can result in necrotizing fasciitis, myositis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Following acute infections caused by S pyogenes, patients are also at risk for developing immune-mediated post-streptococca...
متن کاملToxic shock syndrome due to group A streptococcal pharyngitis and bacteremia in adults.
Bacteremia and/or toxic shock syndrome are rare complications of streptococcal pharyngitis in adults. This report describes a previously healthy young man with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome who presented with fatigue, high fever, and suspected extensive streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis. Treatment consisted of high-dose antibiotics followed by therapy for consumptive coagulopathy, acute re...
متن کاملToxic shock syndrome-associated staphylococcal and streptococcal pyrogenic toxins are potent inducers of tumor necrosis factor production.
Toxic shock syndrome-associated staphylococcal and streptococcal exotoxins were tested for an ability to induce the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Staphylococcal enterotoxins B and C1, along with streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A, all induced TNF production in a dose-dependent manner, with production peaking on the average at 3 days but continuing over the 6 days tested. This time ...
متن کاملStreptococcal toxic-shock syndrome due to Streptococcus dysgalactiaesubspecies equisimilis in breast cancer-related lymphedema: a case report
BACKGROUND Breast cancer-related lymphedema often causes cellulitis and is one of the most common complications after breast cancer surgery. Streptococci are the major pathogens underlying such cellulitis. Among the streptococci, the importance of the Lancefield groups C and G is underappreciated; most cases involve Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis. Despite having a relatively ...

CONTEXT Toxic shock syndrome has been shown previously to be associated with hyperamylasaemia. However, serum amylase levels do not usually exceed three times upper limit of normal in these cases. CASE REPORT We report a case of a young girl of 17 years who presented with upper abdominal pain, severe shock and raised serum amylase level of 3,898 U/L, giving an impression of severe acute pancr...
